Paul Weller - Rock Werchter Festival, Belgium - July 2, 2000

Internationalists! I'm back unusually quick, for me anyway, with a new show for your listening pleasure. This one is Paul's appearance at the Rock Werchter Festival in Belgium. It's from 2000 when Paul was touring in support of Heliocentric, one of my favourite solo LP's. The record takes a lot of abuse, but I rate it quite highly. And I especially love some of the live versions of those tunes. Frightened has to be one of the best tunes he's ever written. The lyrics in Back In The Fire are superb. And I never get tired of hearing Love Less. Paul recently said the record was "unfocused" and it always amazes me when he sometimes slags off records or songs that I love. Also, the great bassist Edgar 'Summertime' Jones was touring with Paul during this period and he's really a silky smooth player. Love that guy!

So, the sound on this, as we always strive to provide you with here at Weller Exclusives, is A+. It's most likely from a radio broadcast. Please feel free to check it out and I do hope you enjoy!

This one goes out to our friends in Belgium and those attending The Cactus Festival next week!

Paul Weller - Benicassim - August 8, 2002

Internationalists! Hope all is well. I've got a guest submission for you today that was sent to me from one of our friends in Spain. As we are a little less than a month away from Paul's appearance at the Benicassim Festival on July 17th, I thought it's only appropriate to get this one up. Paul took to the stage at the festival back in August 2002 a month before the release of Illumination. After a stellar 2001 saw him touring solo with only an acoustic guitar, he had gotten the band back together for a solid month of warm up dates leading to the huge Route Of Kings concert in Hyde Park. This was the next gig after that. This recording comes from a radio broadcast that was recorded by our friend Juan Míguez Durán. A few notes about the gig from Juan:

I recorded this on mini-disc more than six years ago. The show was on August 3rd, 2002, when I arrived at home that day the concert was being transmitted by RNE3 Spanish Radio. In that moment Paul was playing "Broken Stones" and my recording of it was not complete, the radio speaker talks over the next track and only the last three tracks are for the original transmission. A time after the show was broadcast again and I've recorded the first nine songs and part of "Peacock Suit". I don't know if Paul played more songs that night than the twelve I've recorded in two different days. All the songs are from the same gig, but as I said before they weren't recorded in the same broadcast, that's the reason of possibles differences in the sound. The quality is good and I almost didn't edit the recordings when I transferred them to my PC. There are some interferences and noises, especially on last track "Woodcutter's Son" and seeing the reviews of the gig I've read that Paul gave away the stage because of technical problems.

Despite the minor sound issues, Juan's done a great job of putting this one together and it's most certainly worth a listen if you don't have it. Nothing amazing in the set except the preview of two new tracks. Overall, a solid performance indicative of the band at the time. I seem to remember watching this live on the web in the early days of concert streaming. According to the PW Live Archive, "A Bullet For Everyone" was the opener, but may have been omitted from the broadcast.

Many thanks again to Juan for the contribution.
Dedicated to all our friends in España!
As always, I do hope you enjoy!!

Paul Weller - Shepherds Bush - May 29, 2009 - Island 50th!

Internationalists! Just got this in from one of our very, very good friends (CHEERS Paddy!) and since this was a pretty special celebratory gig for the 50th anniversary of Island Records I knew it had to be shared with the Weller Exclusives family. The performance was mostly acoustic with beautiful accompaniment by The Wired Strings. The set included great covers of John Lennon's Love and Manfred Mann's Pretty Flamingo. Also, fellow band members Andy Crofts and Steve Pilgrim performed solo tunes as well. The highlight of the set for me is a stunning version of The Loved, a b-side from the Wild Wood era.

Please show your thanks by leaving a note in the comments section and, as always, I do hope you enjoy!!

Paul Weller - Walk On By (KTS-314) Europe 94

Internationalists! Well, it's been a while. Not sure why I decided to return on the day that Mr. John Weller was laid to rest. I suppose I just wanted to mark the occasion with a musical celebration of his life's work, that being his son's music. I thought I'd do that by sharing one of the first Paul Weller bootlegs I ever got.

1994 was probably one of my favourite years in general. I was in my mid-twenties, in love with a cool girl, had really wonderful friendships, and one of my musical heroes was finding his way back into the ears of the masses. In May of that year I was lucky enough to see two PW shows, one in New York and the other in Philadelphia. I still rate them as two of the best I've seen. A few months after I was in a run down little shop in my hometown looking for Weller related stuff and scored a few good records in the used bin. When I hit the counter to pay, the fella looked at my records and asked if I was interested in a Weller bootleg. Now this was still the early days of CD and there was no Internet really to search out boots, so a non-cassette bootleg in 1994 was a big deal indeed. "Umm, YES!" was my response and he pulled out this box from under the counter and placed in my excited shaking hands 'Walk On By.'

It was one of the most beautiful things I'd ever seen. If you are a die hard fan like me, and on the constant hunt around this time, you gotta know what I mean. I asked if he could play it for me and he popped it in the player and filled the shop with the sweet opening chords of 'Hung Up' and I imagine the smile on my face was huge. So much for a poker face. The guy knew he had me. "How much?" was my next question. $50 was his reply. I thought for a moment...and then said to myself...it must be done. It was one of those days at the shop to remember. That guy came through with a few more KTS Bootlegs in the next few years before the shop closed down and KTS was put out of business by the authorities, I think. But, this one was such a quality boot that it has remained a fav. Live Wood dropped later in the year, although it didn't make it to the US until the following year, and sort of devalued Walk On By a little as the set is pretty much the same. No matter as it still sounds great. I still consider this the best of Paul's solo bands. And I still play it often. If it's new to you, enjoy. If not, I hope this reminds you of those days when the search was the thing and it was so damn hard to find something as cool as this.

Paul Weller - Absolute Radio - Christmas Zoo Session, December 5, 2008

Internationalists! Hope all of you have had a chance to check out Paul's appearance at the Absolute Radio Christmas Session. It's one of the finer little sets that Weller has done this year. The session includes an acoustic version of Sea Spray, which I think is the first time he's played it that way. Also a gem of a cover with Lovin' Spoonful's Daydream, another tune that has not made an appearance since he played at the Yellow Club in Japan way back in the early 90's. Paul does a really great version for the Zoo session complete with everyone in the the room helping out with a whistle-a-long. Classic!

So here's the audio only version complete with a short introductory interview. I'd like to send out a huge thanks to Marki for the recording. As with loads of stuff here at Weller Exclusives, this is another kind contribution. Cheers Bruv!

Another special thanks to Manu Gomez for the quick work and getting some cover art. Manu's a HUGE part of the collective as well.

Paul Weller - BBC Theatre - April 23, 2001 (A Weller @ The BBC Extra)

Internationalists! Hope all is well! To celebrate one of the most quality Paul Weller releases, the Weller At The BBC digital box set, I thought I'd augment it with a show from Paul's solo acoustic period in 2001. For some reason Paul's performance at the BBC Radio Theatre for BBC Radio 2 was not included in the set. So, I'm here today to correct this omission. This is one of Paul's finer performances enhanced with a few special guests. Included in the set is "Here's One That Got Away" and I'm fairly certain this is the only time Paul performed this tune as a solo artist. He's accompanied by John Francis on violin and it's simply a fantastic rendition. You've also got one of my personal favs in "All The Pictures On The Wall." And Paul alone at the piano doing one of his most poignant songs, "Frightened." Steve white also sits in on a few tunes as well in addition to some backup vocals provided by Bill from Wood.

The BBC aired an edited version of this concert a month later, but this is the FULL performance. It's fairly widely circulated and Yann even posted it at The Cornershop last year. But, I wanted it to be highlighted again especially in light of this weeks BBC release.

So, I do hope you enjoy if you don't already have this one. And I hope that you include it in your Weller At The BBC play list. It's most certainly worthy. All the very best and as always thanks for continuing to make Weller Exclusives a spot in your travels.

Paul Weller - 9:30 Club, Washington DC - September 13, 2008

OK my fellow Internationalists, here's a rundown of the evening. DC is a little less than a two hour drive from my house. Even though the 9:30 Club is two hours away, I consider it my "home" venue as I've seen all my favs there over the years. Doors were set to open about 8pm and I figured we'd get there about 7:15 - 7:30 and queue up. In previous years I would have more than likely been around the first to get there if I was that early. To my surprise there were folks lined up around the block. Unheard of for a PW gig in DC!

As I settled in and got over the initial excitement I always have knowing I'm finally gonna see the man, I noticed it seemed as though they were playing tunes definitely selected by PW. Lots of SOUL/British R&B, etc. LOVED THAT! I had heard good things about The Rifles and they took the stage around 9:15 or so. I was surprised at how freakin' young they are. Or is it I'm just gettin' old? At any rate, they certainly won the crowd and I over after their brief set.

The venue really started to fill up at this point. It's about an average sized club with capacity of 1000 or so. And it was nice to see hardly any spaces in between the people as I know that would make The Guv happy to look out over. The band hit the stage a little after 10pm to a rapturous applause. Everyone was dressed in black and PW had "THE 22 Dreams Black Shirt" on that we've all become familiar with. Kind of made me chuckle a bit to see it yet again. They stormed into "Peacock Suit," which disappointed me a little as I was hoping for "Blink." Not too many surprises from then on for me. The standard set list for this leg of the tour. It's really so different when he's there in front of you belting out songs that I'm not too keen on and it doesn't fucking matter. I'm singing along and Rocking out to every one. "Shout To The Top" was GREAT! There was an extended version of "Wishing On A Star" with a massive guitar solo from Steve Cradock. The tunes from the new record sounded aces as well. I actually would have loved to hear a few more. I still don't know why "Cold Moments," hands down one of the best tunes on the record has yet to get some live airings. At any rate, it was a solid performance indeed.

A few bits of interest. It was PW's guitar tech's birthday, so Paul led the crowd in serenading him with the birthday song. That was fun! Paul seemed to be having a rip roaring time the whole gig, prancing around the stage, smiling, laughing, hugging everyone. My brother seemed to think by the end of the show he was pissed out of his head. Quite possible as "Malice" was pretty sloppy with Paul forgetting his singing cues and dropping the tambourine at one point. He was laughing it up during all this...and so was I watching it. It didn't detract from the gig though. It was great seeing him have such a good time. During the "sheared wood version of Wild Wood" it was just Paul with no guitar dancing around whilst singing. For some reason it just amazed me to see him really getting into the tune aside from singing it and, seriously, as awkward as it is to see his dance moves, I was floored watching the guy let go like that.

I was really proud of DC and all the noise they made to get Paul and band back to the stage for the encore. The highlight being "Broken Stones/Oh Happy Day" with an audience clap along with Paul banging the tambourine again prancing across the stage. After another roaring call from the crowd bigger than the previous one, they came back for "All You Need Is Love" and that was it. A fine performance had come to an end and I'm sure I had a big smile on my face along with everyone else in the venue. There is a small balcony overlooking the stage, directly across from where I was, and the kids from The Rifles hung out there for the whole performance drinking, laughing, and utterly enjoying every moment. It was a cool thing to see.

In a way, I'm glad this was the only show I saw as I probably would have been moaning about the set list otherwise, as it hasn't changed really that much in the past few months. But, I had a whale of a time and although I wouldn't consider it one of my top Weller gigs, it will no doubt be considered one of the funnest...funnest is a word right?

So here is my recording of the gig. It was recorded with my old mini-disc recorder. I've had it for about 15 years now and it's been a work horse indeed. As always, I do hope you enjoy!

The Live LP Series, Vol. 1 - Paul Weller

Internationalists! As I look over at the visitor counter, I see we've passed the 50,000 mark. Nice one folks! I just want to thank you for continuing to make this a spot in your travels. "Keep On Keepin On!"

Well, here is that special series we are starting up that I was talking about last week. The concept is to put together "all live" versions of as many Weller/TSC/Jam albums as we can. It's gonna be a fun ongoing project here at Weller Exclusives. With an endeavor like this, there are loads of possibilities for each compilation. And as always, we try our best to find the best sounding performances for inclusion.

So, our first compilation in the series is Paul Weller's first solo LP and comes from our good friend Mark aka Stone.Believer. Mark has pulled from various gigs starting with the early days of The Paul Weller Movement in 1990, all the way up to Paul's European acoustic tour from last year. It's an eclectic mix indeed and a great insight as to how the songs began and have evolved over the years. One of our cover design partners on this particular project is Jan, who's graced us with loads of DVD covers for the Splinters group over the years. BIG THANKS to both of these cats for their efforts.

We'll be re-visiting this series every few months for other albums and perhaps even different versions of ones we've already done. As I said before, there are all kinds of possibilities. And we definitely hope that you find it as interesting and fun to listen to as we have had in putting it together. As always, ENJOY!!!

The Style Council - Paris Theatre, London - May 25, 1983

Internationalists! Hope you are well! I'm not sure if this is widely circulated or not. But, it's one of my favourite little sets from the early days of TSC. According to the Paul Weller Live Archive this performance was billed as the "Respond Posse", other acts performing were A Craze, Main T Posse, Tracie & The Questions. Recorded by BBC Radio 1 and broadcast on June 10th 1983. One of the cool things in this four song set is the crowd rather enthusiastically singing Happy Birthday to Paul. There's also another instance of Paul perhaps taking the piss, or not, I suppose one could never really tell the difference in those days, and introducing Here's One That Got Away as Punky Cabaret. Pretty funny if you ask me. The Paris Match gets, "This one we've recently recorded for inclusion on Twenty Italian Love Songs, Vol. 2." Nice! Also, there is the super rare, one time only (I think) cover of Jimmy Young's Times Are Tight. As always, Paul puts his stamp on the tune and needless to say, it's a solid take indeed. So, as always, I hope you enjoy!

Internationalists! Our friend Shabby Rd. from the Paul Weller Chat Forum was kind enough to hook us up with Paul's appearance on Mark Lamarr's BBC programme, 'God's Jukebox.' Internationalists! One of the big regrets in my twenty year obsession with the music of Paul Weller is that when TSC made their only visit to the USA in the summer of 1984 I was only 14. Now, that I didn't actually know of them until 1986 doesn't really matter. If I had heard "My Ever Changing Moods" on the radio, as it actually dipped it's feet in the American charts in 1984, and things had started off for me then I was way too young to travel from Virginia up to New York by myself to see them. Many people say that the gigs in the first few years the group were together were really something special. I can only imagine. Luckily, I've got this recording of their second night at The Savoy. It comes from an FM broadcast. Unfortunately it's not the full show, but about an hour of tunes from the concert. What I especially love about the gig is they brought over the horn section so all the tunes are really full of SOUL! As always, I hope you enjoy!!! Keep The Torch Burning!!

Paul Weller & Steve Cradock "WFUV Radio - September 27, 2004"

Internationalists! Well, I'm back with a new show quicker than I thought. This one is a guest submission from an anonymous source. Paul came to New York City in September of 2004 to promote the release of Studio 150. I shared his performance at Tower Records in an earlier post last year. But, earlier that day he stopped by the WFUV radio station for an interview and acoustic session. This recording comes from the broadcast tapes and offers superb quality. I've only ever heard the web stream version and it's great to finally have this document in such quality. It includes acoustic versions of Close To You, Who Brings Joy, and Birds.

So as always, I hope ENJOY and join me in thanking the kind person who provided this show. Cheers!!

PS. Congrats on the new addition Seamus! All the very best, my friend!!

Internationalists! If you are like me, you know how special it is to hear a Paul Weller concert, especially if you're in another part of the world when it goes down. This is one of the rare times that Paul has gone on tour before the release of a new album and played songs in the live arena before you hear them on the LP. I can only imagine how special that can be to a true fan. As Paul embarks on a World Tour with a new band and visits quite a few spots he's not been to in a while, we've got a glimpse of what you might hear as the Weller coach arrives in your neck of the woods. These two concerts show that the new songs indicate the arrival of one of Paul's best albums in years. And the band is super tight! It should be a tour to remember indeed!!

The first gig is from Victoria Hall, Stoke-On-Trent. This one is kindly provided by one the best cats out there, my friend Tony D. A HUGE thanks to him for sharing this one. Here's a message from To'.

Paul Weller – Victoria Hall, Stoke – 06.05.08

Thanks Dave for letting me having some shelf space.

I’m pretty pleased with the way this turned out. It’s not bad for a minidisc but I definitely need to invest in one of those hd recorders.

The recording is pretty much how it turned about apart from some modest eq.

Anyway, I hope a few people give this a listen – new songs & a big change in personnel.

It did seem weird not seeing Whitey behind the kit after 17 years!!

Interesting takes on some old classics as well!!

Enjoy it folks…
To’

And next up is Paul's appearance at the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool. Another solid performance with an amazing encore of 'All You Need Is Love.' And the energy of the crowd when he blasts into 'Eton Rifles' is MAD!! This one comes courtesy of Woodcutter's Son. Some of you may know this cat, and those who do, know what a classy and generous bloke he is. Thanks so much, my Brutha!!

Paul Weller - Bootlegs & Rarities (A Guest Submission from: seamiedev)

Internationalists! I've got a special guest submission for you. My friend Seamus aka seamiedev put together this compilation series a while back and wanted to share it with the readers of Weller Exclusives. I've been promising to get it posted for over a month now. Apologies for the delay to Seamus and to you folks. So, it's a five part series and I'll be posting all five volumes over the next week. It's made up of radio and concert performances as well as demos all from the solo era. Cheers to Seamus compiling it and as always, I hope you ENJOY!!

Paul Weller - Rome, Italy 10-29-05

Internationalists! As always, I hope all is well in your world. Up for your listening pleasure this week is a fairly recent performance in Italy from 2005. This one is from an FM source, so the sound is ACE, but it is not the full gig as it has been edited for radio. I do quite like the tune "Blink And You'll Miss It" and PW was opening most shows with it on this tour. It's one of the FUNKIER guitar driven tracks that he's done. So, not too much else to add. It's a tight little set and sounds FAB!! I do hope you ENJOY and all the best to you! This one goes out to my Italiano SoulBrutha, Flavio aka Capt. Stax!
